Paper cutting artist goes viral
There is an allure to a bold, black line that is set within a field of white. To hear Shantell Martin tell it in the below video clip, “The pen knows where it’s going, and I’ve gotten very good at following.” Her process is stream of conscious, creating large-scale works without a plan and with only the flow. She explains, “If I’m doing a giant wall drawing I may just walk up and down for a while to warm up, and then I just go for it. The work unfolds by itself.” The work portrays fantastical visions of other worlds. Faces peer through unlikely spaces and words dance along in unlikely ways. The world has become her canvas and her line-work has evolved from sketchbook pages, to wall pieces, to covering found objects, all as a way to continue her ongoing narrative. Her work has met with success in the fine art galleries and museums, but it has also been integrated into the commercial art world, either as a backdrop for high-end boutiques, or illustration for commercial designs....
