Ellen Jewett makes incredible sculpture which may find its origins between mythical children’s books and horror stories. Her animals are elegant and meditative, but appear to be dissipating before our eyes.
Jewett is inspired by her rich background including experience in anthropology, medical illustration, and exotic animal care. These passions are seen clearly in her devotion to biology, peacefully dissecting her characters and merging them with their natural environments.
Lately, Jewett has gravitated to a more minimal approach to making. “I find my sculptures are evolving to be of greater emotional presence by using less physical substance,” she explains.
