Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the most provoking and controversial photographers of the 20th century. He was an incredibly blunt, thought-provoking, and intelligent artist. Some would say he wasn’t an artist at all, but he definitely brought something revolutionary into the world of modern photography. When you look at his photography, you are sure that you haven’t seen anything similar. Before declaring himself as a homosexual, Mapplethorpe was in a relationship with punk singer and writer Patti Smith. In 2010 Smith wrote a book “Just Kids” about their love and life when they were only 20 years old. The documentary Mapplethorpe: Look at the Picture gives us an opportunity to appreciate this dynamic artist that is so often forgotten.
