Decorative embroidery adds new dimension to photographs

Brooklyn based artist Melissa Zexter photographs people and then hand embroiders each printed image changing the look with layers of colored thread.

By combining the folk art of embroidery and the modern art of photography, Zexter creates strata of image and meaning.

When viewing the photos, the eye focuses first on the human portrait, a frozen moment in time, and then on the patterns and shapes created by the embroidery, which is added methodically.

The contrast creates new dimensions to both images and textile.

They become artifacts of human existence and portraiture simultaneously.
