It’s a new year, and thus we have a new set of winners of National Geographic’s annual photography contest. The contest’s three categories of People, Places, and Nature result in a range of winning photos. Below are the category winners and a few of the honorable mentions. These winners were chosen from the more than 15,000 entries that were submitted this year.
In the photo immediately below, James Smart captured the moment in Simla, Colorado. He was watching the tornado grow as it approached the town, but it was also moving slowly which allowed his team to get closer. He said: “Driving down a Colorado dirt road, we were lucky enough to be on the west of the tornado, so it was front lit. This really helped to get great detail out of the image and the perfect light for the sky and foreground.”
And if this leaves you wanting more, check out these nine winning photos from last year’s contest.
