Vintage housewives suffer gaping wounds filled with flowers

Melting faces, surreal figures, and distorted visions make up artist Pierre Schmidt’s strange world.

He walks a precarious line between the beautiful and grotesque, depicting gruesome scenes gushing with flowers instead of human innards.

Schmidt uses retro images of 1950’s housewives, altering them with digital editing, collage, and illustration.

He changes the housewives to expose their insides through gaping wounds, which give way to a flood of flowers, pouring from their bodies.

His pieces explore a range of themes including the dark side of ideal lives, the tortured psyche, and evolving female identity.
