7 GIFs shown on the big screen at the 2015 First Look Film Festival

For the first time in its four-year run, Museum of the Moving Image’s First Look Film Festival showcased another form of moving image on the big screen: GIFs. MoMI’s Associate Curator of Digital Media Jason Eppink commissioned seven original looping animations that were projected in the museum’s Redstone Theater for 10 minutes before the feature film screenings.

The selected artists come from both the world of fine art and Tumblr, including A. Bill Miller, Lorna Mills, Eva Papamargariti, Kidmograph, Haydiroket, Lacey Micallef, and Sholim. With a wide array of aesthetics and talents from all over the world (U.S., Argentina, Canada and Turkey), the program gave GIFs a new platform to challenge the movie-going audience. The 2015 First Look Film Festival ran from January 9 to 18 in New York City.
