Using an intriguing process of soaking living flowers in liquid nitrogen, New York based photographer Jon Shireman has created this series of photographs. The images in his ‘Broken Flowers’ series show the original intact flowers paired next to an image of their frozen-and-smashed fate.

After the flowers are soaked in liquid nitrogen for 30 minutes Shireman hurls the bouquet at a white background and watches as it shatters into hundreds of tiny pieces. In this process he distances the ‘flower’ from its typical optimistic romantic references and recontextualizes the icon to evoke grim ideas of deceit and loss.
