Being a cyclist in a big city is like being apart of a club. You know, the kind of club like when you are driving down the road and you see someone with the same car as you in the same color; you give each other a friendly wave to acknowledge your impeccable shared taste with a complete stranger. As a bike starts to become apart of one’s identity, it gets assimilated into a persons visual style. Photographer Sam Polcer has captured fashionable New Yorkers with their trusty bicycles in his series titled ‘Preferred Mode.’
“I fell in love with biking here in New York City,” explains Polcer. “Once you realize what biking in New York can do for you as a New Yorker – being able to explore places that you wouldn’t normally explore, get places faster, see neighborhoods better, meet cool people, and do that without having to struggle on the subway, or taking buses, or taking cabs, or getting stuck in traffic – It opens the city to you in a way that nothing else can.”
These photos and more are published in Polcer’s book titled New York Bike Style.
