The latest development in the world of 3D printing is the handheld LIX pen. Similar to its predecessor, the 3Doodler, the LIX allows one to draw a 3D self-sustaining line in space. Its sleek and lightweight size distinguishes the LIX, making it a more accessible tool for architects, designers and artists.
The LIX is powered by a USB 3.0 port and, similar to a hot glue gun, it takes about a minute to heat up. A thin plastic rod is inserted into one end and then extruded out of the hot nozzle, which creates the line.
Not requiring any special software, the LIX is immediate and versatile freeing individuals to create prototypes, clothing modifications, sculpture, jewelry and vessels, without having to futz around in their sketchbook first.
