Designers plan a future of glowing trees and intelligent roads. Are you ready?

The goal of the Roosegaarde Studio, founded by Danish-designer Daan Roosegaarde, is to take digital technology beyond the computer screen and create intelligent environments that are an extension of the human consciousness and physicality. Roosegaarde notes that the world is becoming increasingly digitized and asks the questions: “What is this world going to look like?” and “Who is going to be in control?”

The Roosegaarde studio spearheaded a number of innovative projects including genetically modified ‘Glowing Trees’ that could potentially replace street lamps; a ‘Smart Highway,’ whose temperature and photo sensitive paints can both illuminate the road at night, as well as indicate icy weather; and ‘Intimacy’ outfits that turn transparent when the wearer gets excited. Roosegaarde, humorously describing himself as “a hippie with a business plan,” states that the role of the designer is to create new niches, into which the market can follow.
