Sergio Silva‘s designs are simple, clever and elegant. In his chess set all the pieces are rectangular blocks; the rank is noted by the positioning and size of a hole that runs through each block. Though the pieces are untraditional, one immediately knows which is which.

His vase design, ‘Flex,’ consists of a segment of plumbing tubing attached to an aluminum base, which cleverly adjusts to the length of the flower placed inside.

My favorite design is ‘Oyule,’ a lightbulb that has been repurposed as a kerosene lamp. This design not only merges the present with the past, but also causes the viewer to briefly reflect upon the phenomenon of light, the various ways it’s generated, as well as its functions in our society. Share
