Joel Rea is an Australian painter whose work mixes hyperrealism with fantasy. Rea’s paintings borrow landscapes from both our dreams and nightmares and mixes in well-dressed business men and women.
A common theme in Rea’s art is falling. In one painting a businessman is falling towards a large tiger. In another strange scene a tsunami is mysteriously being held at bay by a businessman holding up a piece of paper. In other works we just see business people falling through clouds evoking memories of the September 11th tragedy. These strange paintings evoke an unsettling subconscious sickness in which terrible events seem to be looming.
