Artist Valerie Hegarty creates strange sculptures of decaying, mutating, abused and otherwise destroyed works of traditional art. Using a surreal aesthetic Hegarty doesn’t seem to follow a specific method of destruction, but does question the validity of art in relation to time-passed and circumstance.
One oil painting of a boat looks as if it’s melting right off of its wooden frame. Another painting of a forest has been ironically destroyed by a woodpecker, which remains sitting on the art proud of his contribution. Hegarty’s work is quite violent in style and elicits a sharp emotional response to the condition, origin, and future of art objects.
