The all-women Wellesley College has a new person on campus – a nearly naked sculpture of a sleepwalking man. The college’s Davis Museum recently moved the statue from inside to a high-traffic outdoor location. This move has stirred up quite a controversy.
One student commented, “There’s nothing I want less than a statue of a naked dude lurking outside my dorm window.” The “naked dude” is a realistic sculpture by artist Tony Matelli titled ‘Sleepwalker.’
Davis Museum director Melissa Fischman stands by the controversial public sculpture explaining, “Art provokes dialogue, and discourse is the core of education.”
