‘Liquid Jewels’ made from exploding balloons covered with paint

Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner is no stranger to capturing explosions on camera. For his ‘Liquid Jewel’ high-speed photography series he turned his attention to balloons covered with multicolored paint. This unlikely technique creates amazing textures when exploded with the prick of a needle. When popped, the air pressure inside the balloon expands, throwing the paint in different directions with gorgeous results.

If you take a close look, you can see how the individual shades of red, blue, green and yellow start to mix together and create beautiful color combinations within only a few microseconds. The fleeting moments are captured and frozen in time to become these colorful carousels of natural force.
