Second Story Art Gallery in NYC is having its first exhibition by German artist Gregor Hildebrandt. Hildebrandt uses cassette tapes, videotapes, vinyl records and their cases as his materials to create art.
One series of minimal work uses just the unreeled black tape against white-painted backgrounds to create vintage looking wall-art. In another piece, Hildebrandt molds vinyl records into bowls and then stacks them to create sculpture. Hildebrandt uses retro materials that reference pop culture, media, and technology, which all elicit memories that ask us to examine our own cultural identity.
The exhibit entitled “The Story Runs Across Us” is on view through mid February.
