3D printing welder robot defies gravity with metal line drawing

Dutch designer Joris Laarman has developed a new 3D printing technique that allows him to print using molten metal. The strength and rapid hardening properties of the material create a scenario where the machine can draw seemingly impossible lines in mid air.

The strategy of combining a robotic arm and 3D printing techniques for metal have huge potential in the construction industry as well as in space because the arm and materials are not affected by gravity.

The designer is currently printing a bench for an exhibition of his work at Friedman Benda Gallery in New York this May.
