This 3D printed kinetic sphere by Proxy Design Studio is a single gear circuit. When you spin one gear the entire ball is activated with motion. The team of designers was inspired by nature to create this insanely complex ‘million polygon face object’ called ‘Mechaneu V1.’
These kinetic sculptures aim to compare the benefits of the 3D printing process with the benefits of the way in which nature constructs forms. Toru Hasegawa explains, “Nature solves many problems through shape alone, using material only where needed and taking out where unnecessary…” This ‘toy’ is printed using algorithms similar to cellular growth patterns. Amazingly, the Mechaneu V1 is produced in a ‘one-shot’ printing technique.
The Mechaneu V1 embodies exciting implications to the potential benefits of 3D printing in design, material, and manufacturing process. You must see this gear-sphere in action in the video below!
