Giant rubber duck sculpture spreads joy around the world

In 2007 Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman conceived of an 85-foot tall duck sculpture that would tour the globe “spreading joy.” Since 2007, his yellow duck, the worlds largest, has visited Europe and Asia delighting viewers.

In September 2013, the Rubber Duck made its first visit to the United States where it floated in Pittsburgh’s three rivers.  The giant instillation drew a million viewers in just over a month. Hofman says people like the “friendly floating rubber duck” because it “doesn’t discriminate or have a political connotation.”  The duck has moved on from Pennsylvania, but based on its success there, it could be back in the United States soon.
