Tobias Gutmann sits inside of the ‘Face-o-mat’ with his art materials on-hand. When a coin donation slides into the slot, he looks through the square opening at the customer’s face and paints a minimalist portrait of the happy patron in three minutes. He then theatrically dispenses the portrait through a slot fashioned like a cartoon printer. To achieve an authentic (sarcastic) photo printer feel, Gutmann adds special sound effects.
Tobias Guttmann has taken the Face-o-mat around the world and has painted over 700 faces from Europe to Africa and Asia. This project cleverly brings up ideas about technology, commerce, and what is is to be human.
