These ceramic designs use the icon of a silhouetted vase to create clever functional forms. Artist Kala Stein chooses a graphic ‘base-shape’ and then repeats the two-dimensional form imbuing it with a new style and functionality. The final work is both clever and elegant incorporating the intended floral arrangements as a sculptural element of the reimagined vase.
These thoughtful ‘silhouette vases’ involve a complex plaster-mold process to create. Once a form is chosen its (nearly) 2-D negative gets produced in plaster many times over. Porcelain slip is then poured into the void revealing a finished ceramic positive.
Each of these sculptural vessels are unique and handmade using the slip-casting technique. Find this beautiful work and more in Stein’s etsy shop here!
