The iconic designs of NYC coffee cups

Photographer Henry Phillips has traveled the streets the New York City photographing disposable cups before they are filled with coffee. A collection of these images was posted on Gear Patrol. Click through to the original post to see where each cup came from and how much the coffee cost.

The iconic blue cup with the text “We are happy to serve you” is such a nostalgic design that it has been recreated from the oft-seen disposable paper into more permanent ceramic version. The cup is known as the Amthora and was designed by Leslie Buck in 1963. It was initially targeted to Greek-owned coffee shops in NYC and has been called by the New York Times as “perhaps the most successful cup in history”.
