Every parent of a young child has to make the decision of if, and to what extent, they are going to censor their child’s Internet experience. The Internet is full of fun interactive games that facilitate learning. However, it also opens up a world of adult topics like pornography, violence and racism, as well as potentially exposes children to sexual predators.
A French group, Innocence en Danger who works internationally “to sensitize world opinion on the increasing problems of paedo-criminality,” created a campaign that distorts real faces into the iconic cutesy smiley face emoticons. These disturbing images are intended to warn parents and young people about adult predators who may be hiding at the other end of chat room conversations. The campaign asks, “Who’s really talking with your child on the Internet?”
