Lawrie Brown’s images of green corn and blue chicken remind me of a colorful-food party I was invited to once… Instead of creating dishes with naturally vibrant food, like beets, most guests (including myself) just added food coloring. Though everything tasted great the meal was incredibly unappetizing!
Brown’s ‘Colored Food’ series addresses people’s psychological response to the visual aesthetics of food. She also challenges her audience’s notion of natural. Brown juxtaposes industry-dyed food with her own painted dishes like cheddar cheese next to purple crackers. Even though the cheddar cheese has been dyed its orange color, it seems wholesome paired against the purple crackers which seem grotesque.
