Touching film puts hand-painted art back into animation

Ernest & Celestine is an Oscar-nominated French-Belgian animated production about an unlikely bond that forms between a bear and a mouse respectively.

One of the directors, Benjamin Renner, had this to say, “This film, you can draw it. You can see how it’s made. You can see the ink. In a Pixar movie, I need to study for five years before I can try to do something like this, because I need to know how to use computer, how to shade, how to do all those things.” Featuring hand-painted watercolor backgrounds, Ernest and Celestine is a colorful tale of hope, praised by critics and audiences alike, with an English version starring Forest Whitaker as Ernest on its way.
