Slow motion video shows graceful robotic bird flight

SmartBird is a project launched in 2011 by the automation technology company Festo. This project is focused on developing a flying technology that mimics the motions of a bird. This is accomplished through a lightweight construction and “an active articulated torsional drive unit.”

I have seen these impressive robotic birds before, but Earth Unplugged from BBC Worldwide had the opportunity to film the device and feature it in a beautiful slow motion video. The short movie below shows the grace and accuracy of the SmartBird in a way I have never seen.

If you want to learn more about the project watch the TED Talk by the head of Festo’s corporate design, Markus Fischer, at the bottom of the page!
