SmartBird is a project launched in 2011 by the automation technology company Festo. This project is focused on developing a flying technology that mimics the motions of a bird. This is accomplished through a lightweight construction and “an active articulated torsional drive unit.”
I have seen these impressive robotic birds before, but Earth Unplugged from BBC Worldwide had the opportunity to film the device and feature it in a beautiful slow motion video. The short movie below shows the grace and accuracy of the SmartBird in a way I have never seen.
