Whitechapel Gallery recently launched an installation by French Algerian artist Kader Attia. The installation revisits the Bible story of Jacob’s Ladder via a giant structure of artifacts and books that fills the main hall of the gallery. The structure includes a cabinet of curiosities with antique scientific equipment and books that are spotlighted by a beam of light that shines from floor to mirrored ceiling. This lighting effect creates an “infinity reflection” that represents Jacob’s vision of angels ascending to heaven.
Attia’s installation reflects on a wide range of contemporary studies and explores identity in this age of globalization.
