Delicate sculptures created through paper folding

Using pattern and repetition, Matt Shlian’s paper sculptures have a way of encouraging the viewer to pause and appreciate this quiet art form. Identifying himself as a “paper engineer,” Shlian began his interest in the craft during his undergraduate studies when an adviser turned him on to pop-up books. Playing with light and shadow, Shlian’s forms range from large to small-scale while maintaining their quite allure.

Shlian explains, “Guided by wonder, my work is made because I cannot visualize its final realization; in this way I come to understanding through curiosity.”
