Remember the ’70s and ’80s films where the climax of the movie is the muscle car jumping over the top of a steep hill? What a rush! Photographer Matthew Porter takes this retro movie phenomenon and adds a funny special effect twist. He manipulates photos of muscle cars so that they are slightly higher in the air than gravity would allow, making the scenes riveting and also completely unrealistic.
His work creates a double-take sensation: first, you feel the excitement of the car scene jump and then you realize that the action-packed scene may be nothing more than a UFO mysteriously lifting the car straight up into the air. The hovering effect totally nullifies any forward motion, action, or suspense, which left me a little embarrassed for my false initial excitement.
