If you haven’t heard yet, a GoPro is a high-resolution camera that is durable, portable, and waterproof. They are the adventurer’s camera, famous for taking rugged action shots. Sending the GoPro Hero HD camera into space is becoming an exciting trend.
The basic ingredients are a weather balloon, parachute, and a GPS tracking device that will (hopefully) locate the camera after it drops. The camera reaches an approximate height of 100,000 feet, and captures the blue-green cloud covered arch of Earth, before the balloon pops and the camera parachutes back toward the ground.
Some individuals and companies have even attached objects in front of the camera lens, which becomes the foreground of the footage. A few of the space voyagers, so far, have been a Toshiba chair, Hello Kitty, a LEGO-man with a Canadian flag, and a hamburger. Watch as these objects travel on a beautiful space voyage in the videos below!
