Invisible yet evidently felt, gravity can be distinguished by the weight we feel and the sight of falling objects. Inspired by this idea, Japanese designer Makoto Tojiki has created the Newton Table.
Sitting atop the table is an apple, a metaphor to an old tale that traces back to Newton’s first realization of gravity’s existence. The surface appears to be incredibly dense but the apple pushes down the center of the table. This illusion humorously implies that the weight of the fruit is enough to impact the solid surface.
This playful idea explored using modern furniture brings fun and philosophy in to the home!
