Mouth-watering hyperrealistic paintings of food

Since the ’80s, Dutch artist Tjalf Sparnaay has been painting hyperrealistic still lifes of junk food, desserts and other decadent eatable indulgences. His paintings are so rich in details that his rendered food looks even more tasty than the real thing.

He does not play up the meals with fancy dishes or interesting backgrounds, he is simply interested in capturing the essence of the food. He focuses on this so intensely that if you look at the paintings long enough that delicious cheeseburger begins to look a little disgusting.

Do you think this ‘disgusting’ effect is an intended part of the art experience?  hmm…
