Painterly long-exposure photography of California waves

Physician by day, photographer by night, the Santa Barbara-based David Orias uses a long lens, slow shutter speeds and a special technique of panning to photograph waves. The result is a series of images that visually captures the romance of the ocean through painterly photographs.

Through his lens, the golden waves of Ventura Beach are silky and glistening under the sun like flowing locks of California hair. Sometimes even a hint of a rainbow appears in the reflection dominated by shades of gold and blue. The atmosphere of the ocean is something that only a Southern California native can understand and capture in its essence.

Currently David Orias uses a Canon 5D Mark III and an f4 1.4x teleconverter, along with a telephoto 600mm lens. That is some high end wave-catching equipment!
