Deceptive paper sculptures stretch out like an accordion

Things are not as they seem in the world of art. These sculptures appear as dense heavy plaster objects made to withstand thousands of years, but upon close inspection they are the exact opposite. Beijing artist Li Hongbo creates illusionistic sculpture by building his work out of thousands of layers of paper.

What you think is a solid object magically becomes an accordion of light-weight paper. Hongbo’s sculptures are inspired by the traditional Chinese toys called paper gourds, that are also made from layers of stretchable paper.
